ABSTRACT
Social
network services are becoming increasingly popular, and people are using these
networks to obtain and share information. The application of social network and
social media to the collection, storage and review of personal information
presents opportunities for improved personal health management. Social media is also playing an
increasingly important role as the sources of health related information.
In the past few years have witnessed the rapid rise
of social media, such as Web forums, blogs, wikis and media-sharing websites.
Social media websites harness the “wisdom of crowds”, giving
Internet users have convenient
and instant access to information and the communities. These new tools and
novel information sources are also becoming ubiquitous due to the increased
access to the Internet and mobile communication, such that participants in
social media systems can obtain public
health information more quickly and directly than at any time in history. Moreover, members of the general public can
readily discuss their health conditions, disease questions, anxiety, and
illness treatments advice interactively with doctors and nurses in social media
systems, and how they can quickly find the nearest clinic or hospital around
their environs.
This
project confirms the growing importance of social media in health communication.
It also provides evidence regarding opportunities and challenges faced by
health professionals and general public.

1. INTRODUCTION
1.1 ABOUT
THE PROJECT
In preparing a system on Online Social Media
System for Healthcare Information Management lets first see what the word
healthcare stands for, Health care
(healthcare in American English), refers to the treatment and management of
illness, and the preservation of health through services offered by the
medical, dental, pharmaceutical, clinical laboratory sciences (in vitro
diagnostics), nursing, and allied health professions. Health care embraces all
the goods and services designed to promote health, including “preventive,
curative and palliative interventions, whether directed to individuals or to
populations” Health care systems are designed to meet the health care needs of
target populations.
Online social media
system for healthcare
Information management is a social
interaction site for the public and qualified doctors and nurses to interact on
issues related to their health and in most cases, getting aid as timely
fashioned as possible. This system will be managed by the Health Informatics
System (HIS) unit, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife in conjunction with
Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital, Ile-Ife.
The
Health
Informatics is the use of computer technologies in healthcare to store,
share, transmit and analyze clinical knowledge and data.
There are a wide variety of health care systems
around the world. In some countries, the health care system has evolved and has
not been planned, whereas in others a concerted effort has been made by
governments, trade unions, charities, religious, or other co-ordinate bodies to
deliver planned health care services targeted to the populations they serve.
However, health care planning has often been evolutionary rather than
revolutionary.
Online social media system for Healthcare
Information Management is a broad web-based system that will be able to perform
a lot of functions but this project will be handling a basic aspect in human
health, which is DRUG ABUSE. The
Project will entails how drugs are to be used, effect of drugs to the society
at large, intake of drugs and dosages, alcohol intake, effect of drugs on the
brain and lots more.
Doctors, especially from Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching
Hospitals, Ile-Ife will be able to register their information, area of
specialization and also, they will be able to post articles on the website.
These articles may be in different forms and it will generally put into
consideration those things that happen around us day-in day-out. Some of those
articles could involve:
a.
Anti-natal
and post-natal care
b.
Nursing
mothers
c.
Dangers
of drugs
d.
Career
advice
e.
Abortions
f.
Symptoms
of some diseases like HIV/AIDS, gonorrhea, syphilis, cancer etc.
g.
Exercise
and fitness
h.
Depression
and how to overcome it
i.
Sex
j.
Puberty
issues
k.
Balanced
diet including eating disorders.
l.
And
many other common health related issues.
PROBLEM
DEFINITION
Many
a times, people consume drugs on the basis of the information they get from
friends or relatives. The reason why they took these drugs was best known to
the doctor who prescribed it, the reason which may not be effective for another
person. The implication has caused the death of many yet, the public is not
fully aware of this. The development of this social media system for healthcare
information management will address this issue to a large extent.
Also,
a lot of people are ignorant when it comes to health. The adolescent are more
affected when it comes to health education and they find themselves responding
to such issues negatively. This project will present enough articles which will
be coming from reliable sources to solve this problem.
Due
to lack of first aid knowledge, people die almost every second. For instance,
in a case of an asthmatic patient who had this attack and couldn't reach out
for inhaler. People around should be able to provide first aid to help this
particular patient, it might not be possible in a case where the public is not
well oriented.
Most
people are scared of visiting hospitals for medical check-up, counseling and
treatment. Some prefer to die in their house without going to the hospital for
treatment, reason being that they are scare of what the doctor will diagnose
about them. This problem should be eradicated after enough interaction with the
doctors.
OBJECTIVES OF THE SYSTEM
The proposed online social media system aims at
achieving the following:
i.
To
provide basic health information to the public, especially about the intake of
drugs.
ii.
Patient's
confidential issues could anonymously be discussed. For instance, one can
explain to the doctor about the symptoms of an ailment and get advice from
professionals on what to do, especially about issues that can lead to
stigmatization.
iii.
Adolescent
health education
iv.
Preventive
health measures
v.
Timely
fashioned health information
vi.
Low Costs: definitely,
it's cheaper to use online social networking for both personal and business use
because most of it is usually free.
vii.
Builds Credibility: doctors
can gain the patient's confidence if they can connect to them on both a
personal and professional level.
viii.
Doctors
can well monitor and manage their patients well.
ix.
Improve public health
programming and increase information access to the public.
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
The method to be used for getting data will include
the following:
i.
Oral
Interviews
ii.
Questionnaires
iii.
Internet
iv.
Existing
books on drug intake
v.
Existing
data
TECHNOLOGY TO BE
USED
The technology to
be used in this project includes:
1. PHP (pre-processor hyper programming)
2. My-SQL for collection and storage of
database
3. WAMP server for offline launching of
the website
4. Adobe dreamweaver
5. Adobe flash for designing and adding
effects to images.
CONCLUSION
To conclude it
all, I believe the system will be of a good use to the society at large and it
will also reduce death rate in our society.
Drug abuse or
misuse of drug and dosage will be taken care of to a large extent.
Also, taking into
account of the tips and articles that will be posted on the proposed system,
the general public will especially, the young people will be able to get enough
health information and by-pass some dangerous risk they might want to take.
